Thank you for this wonderful information, it will help along way. My question can ordinary shareholder be allowed to attend any physical meeting of a company he has interest on, whiles he's interest where bought on the secondary market through he's or her stockbroker?

Thank you for this wonderful information, it will help along way. My question can ordinary shareholder be allowed to attend any physical meeting of a company he has interest on, whiles he's interest where bought on the secondary market through he's or her stockbroker?
Yes—an ordinary shareholder can attend a company’s physical meeting (typically the Annual General Meeting, AGM) even if the shares were bought on the secondary market through a stockbroker. But there are a few important conditions you should understand:
1. You must be a registered shareholder
Buying shares via a broker doesn’t automatically mean your name is on the company’s register. In Nigeria, shares are often held in a CSCS account (via Central Securities Clearing System).
If your shares are properly credited to your CSCS account and linked to your name → you’re recognized as a shareholder.
If the shares are held in a nominee account (broker’s name) → you may not have direct rights unless you request representation.
2. You need to be on the Register of Members before the closure date
Companies announce a “closure of register” before AGMs.
Only shareholders on record before that date are eligible to attend and vote.
3. You’ll receive (or can request) a notice/invite
Companies send AGM notices to shareholders:
By email/post
Or publish publicly (e.g., NGX filings)
Even if you didn’t receive one, you can still attend if you prove ownership.
4. What to bring
To attend physically:
Valid ID
Evidence of shareholding (CSCS statement or broker confirmation)
AGM notice (if available)
5. Voting rights
You can vote in person
Or appoint a proxy if you can’t attend
Practical reality in Nigeria
In the Nigerian market (via the Nigerian Exchange Limited):
Most companies allow any verified shareholder into AGMs
Many retail investors attend AGMs mainly for:
Dividends clarification
Company updates
Shareholder perks (sometimes)
Bottom line
✔ Yes, you can attend—even if you bought through a broker
❗ But you must be properly registered and recognized as a shareholder before the AGM cutoff date

Thanks for the clear explanation. So basically, as long as my shares are properly registered in my name before the cutoff, I can show up at the AGM with my ID and proof of ownership. Makes sense

Most people look at a list like this and see payments.

An experienced investor looks at it and sees patterns of capital flow.

Dividends, specials, and bonuses are not just rewards. They are signals.

An interim dividend tells you the company is generating cash consistently enough to share before year end. That speaks to operational strength and confidence.

A special dividend often tells a different story. It may mean excess cash, asset sales, or a period of unusually strong earnings. It is good, but it is not always repeatable. The wise investor separates recurring income from one-off events.

Bonus issues are even more misunderstood. Many celebrate them as free money. In reality, they are a restructuring of value, not the creation of it.

What matters is not the bonus itself, but what management is trying to achieve. Sometimes it is about improving liquidity. Sometimes it is about signaling growth. Sometimes it is simply optics.

Yea, he is allowed to attend a physical AGM of a company but there are "IFs".

Rightly said.
