A Nigerian referee known as Mustapha Bello has been confirmed dead after he was struck by a thunderstorm in Niger State.
This tragic incident occurred during a football match on a school field.
Reportedly, rain was falling during the football match. The players left the field to settle into one of the classrooms around. The referee with his assistant rushed back to the field to beckon on other players to join them.
They were still on the field when the thunder struck him and his assistant. They were quickly rushed to the hospital and the referee was confirmed dead on arrival while the assistant was revived.
Mustapha Bello was a senior official in Nigeria football league and also a member of the Nigeria Referee Association (NRA).
