NLC BLAMES POLICY SOMERSAULT FOR NNPC, DANGOTE DISAGREEMENTS

Speaker: Joe Ajaero, President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), made statements regarding the ongoing issues between the Nigeria National Petroleum Company (NNPC) and Dangote Petroleum Refinery.

Key Issue: Ajaero attributes the disagreements between NNPC and Dangote to government policy inconsistency and fraudulent practices. Specifically, he claims that certain forces are trying to regulate Dangote's pricing, which goes against the principle of a deregulated economy.

Regulation of Dangote's Product: He questions the government’s actions, accusing them of fraud by trying to regulate how much Dangote sells his locally produced petroleum products. According to Ajaero, this is unfair since Dangote's product doesn't include additional costs like landing fees, as is the case with imported products.

Deregulation and Competition: Ajaero emphasized that a deregulated market should promote choice and competition. He asserts that the government should not interfere with the private sector’s pricing or selling strategies. He argues that while NNPC and Dangote should both operate in the market, regulating Dangote's prices contradicts the idea of deregulation.

Call to Action: Ajaero urges Nigerians to speak up, reminding them that the government had promised that deregulation would allow the private sector to drive the economy, with minimal government involvement.

Accusations of Fraud: Ajaero repeatedly calls the government's attempts to control Dangote's pricing fraudulent, especially since the product was locally produced without landing costs, making it unreasonable to sell at the same rate as imported petroleum products.

This statement was made during a press interaction at the Murtala Muhammed Airport in Lagos on Wednesday, September 18, 2024.
