Nigerian Chess master Tunde Onakoya has broken the Guinness record for the longest chess marathon by playing for 60 hours. Tunde Onakoya embarked on this challenge on Wednesday, 17th April 2024 at Times Square, New York and he won all his opponents including the strongest contenders in the US. He concluded the exercise in the early hours of Saturday, 20th April 2024 and supporters showed up to celebrate with him.

He surpassed the record of 56 hrs 09mins and 37 seconds set by two Norwegians in 2018, Hallvard Haug Flatebø and Sjur Ferkingstad. According to reports, Tunde would have stopped competing at the 58th hour but he vowed to continue playing the game for more hours, to attain his goal of raising $1,000,000 for kids in Africa. He was able to go 60 hours to round up the chess marathon challenge.
