The High Court of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja has issued a N100M fine to the Economic Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for keeping former CBN Governor, Godwin Emefiele in custody since last year.

The judge presiding over the case, Olukayode Adeniyi stated that Emefiele's prolonged detention is a violation of human rights. In turn, he prevented the Federal Government including the EFCC from re-arresting the former CBN Governor unless they were issued a court order. The EFCC however, said Emefiele's arrest was based on a court order and they have vowed to appeal.

Recall that Emefiele was taken into custody by the EFCC in June 2023 for mismanagement of funds. Since then, Emefiele has been in and out of court. In a bid to clear his name, he decided to seek legal action and regain his freedom.
